Electric Gate Not Working? Troubleshooting Common Problems on the Gold Coast

When your electric gate stops responding, it's often something straightforward. This troubleshooting guide walks Gold Coast homeowners through the most common causes of gate motor failures, remote issues, and sensor problems before calling for a repair.

Your electric gate worked perfectly yesterday and now it's refusing to budge. Before you panic, many common gate problems have simple explanations. Here's a practical troubleshooting guide to help you figure out what's going on.

Check the Obvious First

It sounds basic, but start here:

  • Is there power to the motor? Check your circuit breaker or safety switch. Gold Coast storms frequently trip safety switches, especially during storm season from November to March.
  • Has the gate been manually released? Most gate motors have a manual release key or lever. If someone has used it, the motor can't engage until it's locked back in.
  • Are the remote batteries flat? Swap in fresh batteries before assuming the remote is faulty.

The Gate Starts Moving Then Stops

This is one of the most common issues and usually points to one of two things:

Obstruction Detection

Modern gate motors have built-in force sensors or external photo-eye beams. If something is blocking the beam or the gate encounters resistance, it will stop and reverse. Check for leaves, cobwebs, or debris around the photo-eye sensors. On the Gold Coast, spiders love building webs across sensor beams, especially in warmer months. A quick wipe with a clean cloth often solves the problem.

Motor Strain

If the gate track is dirty, the wheels are worn, or the gate has dropped slightly, the motor has to work harder. When it senses excessive resistance, it stops as a safety measure. Inspect the track for built-up dirt, small stones, or debris. For swing gates, check that the hinges haven't seized or the gate hasn't sagged.

Gate Opens But Won't Close (Or Vice Versa)

This often indicates a limit switch issue. Gate motors use limit settings to know where to stop when fully open and fully closed. If these settings have shifted, the motor may think it's already reached its end point. Some motors also have an auto-close timer — if yours has stopped auto-closing, check whether the timer function has been accidentally disabled.

Remote Control Problems

If one remote works but another doesn't, the issue is with that specific remote rather than the motor's receiver. If no remotes work:

  • Check for a flashing LED on the motor control board when you press a remote button. If nothing flashes, the receiver may need replacing.
  • After a power outage, some motor boards lose their programmed remote codes and need to be re-paired. Your motor's manual will have the programming steps.

The Motor Hums But the Gate Doesn't Move

A humming motor that doesn't drive the gate usually means the gears have worn or stripped, or the drive mechanism has failed. This is a repair job rather than a DIY fix, as the motor unit will likely need to be opened and inspected.

Intermittent Operation

A gate that works sometimes but not others can be frustrating. Common culprits include:

  • Loose wiring connections, often caused by vibration over time
  • A failing motor capacitor, which provides the initial surge of power to start the motor
  • Water ingress into the control board housing — Gold Coast humidity and driving rain can find their way into poorly sealed units

When to Call for a Professional Repair

If you've checked the basics and the problem persists, it's time to call someone who works with gate motors regularly. Electrical components carry risks, and attempting to open or rewire a motor control board without experience can cause more damage or create a safety hazard.

Regular servicing — ideally once a year — can prevent many of these issues by catching worn parts, dirty tracks, and failing components before they leave you stuck on the wrong side of your gate.
